Natural History Museum Science and Collections Facility, ReadingTailored cast-in connection solutions

Project Overview

The Natural History Museum Science and Collections Facility, located within Thames Valley Science Park near Reading, is a landmark development designed to support world-leading scientific research and specimen preservation. The facility will house advanced laboratories alongside purpose-built storage for over 28 million specimens, creating a highly specialised environment for scientific innovation and conservation.

Pohlcon UK Contribution

Pohlcon UK collaborated closely with both the façade contractor and frame contractor to develop tailored cast-in connection solutions that met the technical and performance demands of the project.

A range of Jordahl systems were supplied to support multiple connection requirements across the structure:

  • JTA cast in channels for curtain walling connections
  • JTB cast in channels for Trimo cladding panel connections
  • JXA BM cast in channels for steel beam to concrete connections

These solutions ensured efficient installation, high load performance, and long-term durability across the building envelope and structural interfaces.

JTB Channel Solution

Jordahl JTB AR cast in channels played a key role in enabling the secure fixing of cladding systems to reinforced concrete. The system provides a steel anchorage surface that allows two-dimensional adjustability using self-tapping screw connections.

By eliminating the need for on-site drilling, the solution improves safety by reducing exposure to silica dust and avoiding the risk of damaging embedded reinforcement.

The wide-bodied channel design includes a foam-filled insert, allowing quick and straightforward installation. Supplied in 3 metre lengths and available in thicknesses of 3mm and 6mm, and with anchors at either 450mm or 150mm spacing, the channels can easily be cut to length on site. The system offers flexibility to suit a wide range of façade and cladding applications.

Outcome

Through early collaboration and engineered connection solutions, Pohlcon UK supported the delivery of a highly technical facility that will play a critical role in advancing scientific research and preserving natural history for future generations.
